It might seem trivial, by now, to feel anger for yet another terrible phrase uttered by President Trump (namely: “A whole civilization will die tonight,” referred to Iran).

But we need to pay attention to words, because when the president of the USA threatens to destroy a whole civilisation, even if he then backtracks and doesn’t bring on a massive strike on Iran, he normalises a language and its precise intent.

From now on, it will be easier for tyrants around the world to openly threaten vulnerable groups, minorities, enemies, and whoever opposes them. Language is the first frontier of oppression - as it also is the first frontier of liberation - and the role people like Trump play in this worldwide game is spearheading the spread of hatred and violence.
