Two drawings for Roberto Saviano
✒️ It’s Saviano’s Week, in the Netherlands ✒️
Friend and colleague Stine Jensen, PEN Nederland ambassador of Roberto Saviano asked me to put in two drawings what the Italian writer represents for me, and for those who care about democracy and the fight against the mafia.
Saviano is one of the most influential Italian writers, and paid a high price for what he wrote (his first book, Gomorra, in 2006 earned him a death sentence from the Italian mafia, and he has lived under 24/7 armed police protection since). His books are all-inspiring, deep reflections on love, solitude, sadness, and the possibility of change.
So this is what I drew about.
I believe that WE, all the people who surround Saviano, who love what he writes and represents, have the chance to protect him, sharing his words, his story, caring about him and everyone in his situation - in Italy, in the Netherlands, anywhere in the world.
Maybe he won’t feel less lonely, but at least he will have good company.
PS: Make sure you check out, if you speak Dutch, the episodes Stine published in her podcast Zin van de Dag!
